Modern Plus-Size Crochet Patterns by Stitch Diva Studios
Published by Jen February 27th, 2007 in Plus-Size Crochet Patterns.I’ve been crocheting for about five years but crochet is only beginning to get the attention that knitting was getting a few years ago. Not long ago, you could only find afghans, baby sets and the occasional vest. Now people are making little amigurumi animals and necklaces, among other things. This isn’t your grandma’s crochet!
I just spent the last hour and a half searching for modern plus-size crochet patterns without much success. I reviewed all of the free patterns on Crochet Me (the crochet equivalent to knitty.com) and found a few XL patterns but nothing larger.
Update: I just found a long list of free pattern links on the “Crochet 4 Amply and SuperAmply Blessed Yahoo! Group!”

For Crochet Newbies
Crochet is easy to master and produces an item faster (in my opinion) than knitting does. Practice makes perfect (or “good enough!”) Start practicing the stitches by making little squares. Then you can use them as coasters or potholders.
Stitch Diva has a free online crochet tutorial with step-by-step photos.

Sizing Up Crochet Patterns (the short short version)
If you feel like doing a little simple math, you can find patterns in the chain increases from one size to the next and calculate the next sizes up. For example, if the starting chain on one pattern is 34 for small, 44 for medium, 54 for large, and 64 for extra-large, 74 would be XXL, 84 for XXXL, and so on.
But sometimes the patterns are a little more complicated or we’re feeling not so math-y and it’s nice have the designer do the calculations for you since they know how the garment should fit.
I’ll post some articles soon with links to re-sizing instructions for knitting, sewing and crochet.
Happy Crocheting!
Coming up tomorrow - more plus-size sewing resources. It’s taking a while to find good looking patterns!
Now that’s what I like seeing! That butterfly wrap may inspire me to put down knitting needles and figure out this crochet madness
